Discover Terracina - a wonderful Mediterranean gem from Italy

Enjoy the beach, water and Mediterranean flair while following in the footsteps of the Etruscans and explore ancient temples and Roman ruins. Hans Andersen was right to spend an extra day in Terracina on his trip through Italy.

The gentle sea breezes, palms swaying in the wind, lemon and fig trees as well as the many historic sights enthralled the traveler and author. Much has changed since then. Terracina is today a modern seaside town with shops, restaurants and cozy cafes but equally fascinating and welcoming as in HC Andersen's visit.

Terracina

The city is believed to be founded in Etruscan heyday, historians claim that the name comes from the word Terracina Tarchna. Before the birth of Christ the town was of conflict between the Romans and the Volsci tribe (who named the town of Terracina Anxur).

For several centuries, they fought for supremacy over the city, which was very attractive because of its strategic location on the water at the foot of the mountains. An advantageous location increased when the Romans founded the Via Appia Antica and let it run through the whole city.

Even to this day, you can drive along the ancient road and encounter and encounter the remains of the old town. Via Appia Antica is not the only relic of the Romans.
