La Merengada (Meringue War), Catalonia, Spain
I don't know about you but this one looks pretty messy and quite appetizing, especially if you like meringue? Located in the small town of Vilanova i La Geltrú, and part of the yearly Carnival, where not only do they throw meringues but when they run out of those, out come the sweeties and the party carries on.

Custard Pie Championships, Coxheath, United Kingdom
Yes, it even happens in the UK too! The good old custard pie, long a part of the British menu. The championships date back to 1967, and thought of by the councilor of Coxheath. A bit like a paintball game, only with giant pies, the winners are decided by the length and accuracy thrown!

Back to Spain for yet another very messy festival. This time involving eggs and flour! If you thought tomatoes were bad, think how long it takes them to clean up this town after this! Taking place in Alicante, every year for the last two centuries, you will sure feel pretty battered after this one!

The Battle of Oranges, Ivrea, Italy
Dating back to the 12th century, it is Italy's biggest and oldest organized food fight. You may want to go protected as I can imagine you getting a few bruises after having a load of oranges hurled at you! Certainly one where you will end up feeling sticky afterwards.

Spain really know how to have a good time! Top of the list for using food and drink in festivals, this time, I'm sure you've guessed it! Rioja wine! If you like a glass of red or two then this is the one for you. A bit like a water fight but using wine. It is both thrown and drank, so not for those who want to stay sober.
